Seniors often feel forgotten in many aspects of their life. They feel that they are not offered the same opportunities or even advice as their younger counterparts. At Halo Dental, one of our core values is that we offer our dental services to the entire family. That means that everyone from kids to seniors are treated by us at our clinic in New Westminster on a daily basis.
We’d like to extend our knowledge to our clients and offer up some dental health tips for seniors in this blog post.
It’s Never Too Late
Some of our older generations were not taught appropriate dental care when they were younger. One of our dental health tips for seniors is that it is never too late to start caring for your teeth and gums. It only takes a few weeks to start a new good habit, no matter how old or young you are. Seniors can look to incorporating new dental health tips whenever they are ready to begin by following these tricks.
Brush Twice a Day
In our dental health tips for seniors we want to inform you that people of all ages should brush their teeth twice a day. This helps to prevent staining, but more importantly to get rid of plaque and bacteria which can damage teeth and lead to health problems in other parts of the body, if left to hang around for too long. Dentists all over Canada, and our staff at Halo Dental, recommend using an electric toothbrush, as it provides a much better clean.
Denture Care
If you wear dentures, it is important to clean these as regularly as you clean natural teeth. Use a cleansing solution and a soft cloth or brush to clean them. Dentures also collect plaque and bacteria, and this can be dangerous for seniors, as they are more susceptible to diseases and infections, due to weakened immune systems.
Regular Check Ups
In the last of our dental health tips for seniors, we encourage regular dental check ups. A dentist can inspect the oral health of seniors thoroughly and pick up on problems a lot quicker than patients would recognize them themselves. Some seniors may feel that it is not worth their time going to dental health check ups, but at Halo Dental we want everyone to have healthy mouths, and this includes our senior friends!
