What happens during a teeth cleaning appointment?

Whether you are having your teeth cleaned for the first time, or simply can’t remember the process, knowing what happens during the appointment can help you know what to expect about the straightforward and painless process.

Inspection and Inquiry

The first stage of any teeth cleaning is to conduct a visual inspection of the teeth. It is also common during this time for your hygienist to ask questions on relevant subjects, such as any tooth discomfort you might have been experiencing, eating habits and other topics. Your gums are then likely to be gently poked for any signs of gingivitis or other gum-related problems.

If you are combining a teeth cleaning appointment with a general check-up, you may also be offered. or advised to take an X-ray, providing greater clarification on the state of your dental hygiene and oral health.

Plaque and tartar removal

Once the above step has been completed, a deeper removal of plaque and tartar can begin. Tartar is hardened plaque, which attaches itself to the enamel of your teeth, making it very important to remove as soon as possible.

The main section of your teeth cleaning is then completed using a combination of flossing, scraping, scaling, and finally, polishing the teeth. During this stage, it is also common for a suction tube to be used to help remove any spray or debris from your mouth.

Fluoride wash

After the teeth cleaning has been completed, the next step is to have a fluoride wash, which helps to protect your teeth from future decay. This is kept in your mouth for about 30 seconds to one minute, before spitting out and completing the teeth cleaning process.

Importance of teeth cleaning

Having a professional teeth cleaning appointment is an essential part of maintaining good dental hygiene, with regular check-ups wholly recommended.

In taking this proactive approach to your dental hygiene, you are employing one of the most effective methods to help prevent problems with your teeth from occurring in the future.

Me and my family love coming to this dentist. We never feel uncomfortable. We have had many other dentists in the past but Halo is our favourite. We love the receptionist, Sukhi, she is very kind and always has a smile on her face. She greats everyone with the same kindness and makes them feel good. All around everyone I have met at Halo are kind and make sure you are the number 1 priority. We always feel like we are with family when we go to Halo. I would highly recommend coming to Halo Dental because they care about each and everyone of their clients. We will always continue to go to Halo Dental as long as we live.

The best clinic I have been so far. I have been in Canada from last 29 years and could not find a good dentist. Just move to New Westminster two years ago and visited the Dentist in the community. Dr. Bajaj was very very professional and caring. I would recommend her to every one.
